Zachary Quinto Comes Out as a Gay Man

1016_quinto_launch

Zachary Quinto publicly came out today -- and did it without the fanfare of posing on the cover of People Magazine.

Instead of a huge article about his sexuality, the "Star Trek" star chose to nonchalantly confirm he's gay in a New York Magazine piece centered around his role in a movie about the financial crisis and his 8-month stint on Broadway in "Angels in America."

It's the latter that really got Quinto to open up, saying the role of Louis Ironson was the "most challenging thing I've ever done as an actor, and the most rewarding."

"At the same time," he continues, "as a gay man, it made me feel like there's still so much work to be done, and there's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed."

He addresses his sexuality again later in the article, saying "You have the legalization of gay marriage in the state of New York and three months later you have Jamey Rodemeyer killing himself, yet another gay teenager bullied into taking his own life. And, you know, again, as a gay man, I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it."

"Where's this disparity coming from, and why can't we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?" he adds. "We're terrified of facing ourselves."

UPDATE: Quinto has revealed his reasons for coming out in a new post on his blog. Read it, in his own words, below:

"when i found out that jamey rodemeyer killed himself - i felt deeply troubled.  but when i found out that jamey rodemeyer had made an it gets better video only months before taking his own life - i felt indescribable despair.  i also made an it gets better video last year - in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time.  but in light of jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.  our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.  gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying.  parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.  we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world.  we are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.  i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action.  jamey rodemeyer's life changed mine.  and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner - i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me.  now i can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world.  that - i believe - is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other."

suckit- i already stated that i don't condemn gay people. so, your whole comment doesnt make sense. i am sorry if you can't understand how someone can not agree with someone else's actions, yet still think they are a good person and enjoy being around them. It might be above your intelligence or depth. It doesn't surprise me that you say hateful things about me because that is what all the progay people have done on this website. People start namecalling when their feathers are ruffled and they do not have the knowledge, intelligence or conviction to respond properly. I see that you think it is okay to be violent as well with your statement about a bathroom and a razor. Then to go on talking about beating me. You are representing the "progay/anti-bible" viewpoint as being a violent and hateful group of people.
I don't care about the comments thrown at me because you don't even know what my religion is or if I even have one. I never said I was Christian, but you assume I am because i took up for a christian, and therefore nash your teeth at me. There are people who aren't Christians that think it is wrong to practice homosexuality. You are all so predictable. I have had so much fun with the mean and silly responses. Although, it is sad to know that so many people are so close minded and small minded.
I only commented because i saw this guy Jim get bashed for having a viewpoint. And, I'm glad I did because it just open the flood gates to reveal the type of people you all really are.
well, back to enjoying my family and leaving everyone to getting their panties in a wad over my comments!! what a great day :)

Marie-saying that you have several gay friends does not make you less of a bigot. And the next time you think that people living a homosexual lifestyle are "breaking down the family structure," remember that Casey Anthony was straight, so was Marybeth Tinning (killed her 9 children) and Warren Jeffs who had hundreds of wives and children and raped little girls. Wheres the family structure in that?

Never once did I state that I was "anti-bible". I cannot even fathom your thought process. There is no such thing as "practicing homosexuality". It's not a lifestyle bitch, it's an innate characteristic. Get with the 21st century.

Its time to stop with the identity segregation. I am gay I am straight I am black I am white. We are human beings, that's what should matter. We are all part of the same club. The other things are just that...other things...they might help us identify ourselves. The way I like the color blue helps identify me, but it needs not identify who we are. You are gay therefore I won't hang out with you. We need to worry more about things like. We both like chocolate...wanna go get a shake together? This goes for both sides of the coin. I can't get to know you if you only hang out with people who share the same color or sexuality. Time to break down the barriers from both sides!!

Good Evening all. I have read all comments of this story and I must say its deplorable. Here we are talking about a man who was brave enough to tell the world who he truly is, and all because an innocent child felt he has no other option then to take his own life. How pathetic that here we sit an argue back and forth and threaten violence and spout religious knowledge(which 90% of people think they possess but clearly do not). I am a 23 year old gay man, and have lost my family due to it. I feel that if there were less of a judges table based on human sexuality, we wouldn't have such a problem. What makes us any different as people? And as far as Religion is concerned, Homosexuality has no bearing on modern day religion. The bible has been misinterpreted as well as severely embellished in numerous different ways (see Sodom and Gommorah). People see the bible in anyway that fits their ideologies, and not for how it is truly meant to be understood. I think we all need to stop segregating due to fear of the unknown, and realize that if GOD though of us as abominations, then why did he create us? Let us stop the insults and the threats and the false preaching, and remember an innocent child whose life was cut dramatically short due to the unkindness of others, as well as a brave man who felt he could openly share a part of his life with us. Thank you Zachary Quinto.....

To Doug,
I am sorry that you coming out cost you your family. Some people can not and will not accept it. You are right, this story is about courage and what tragedy happened that encouraged him to come out.
I'm glad Zachary was able to do it. and I'm glad you were able too.

"...because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying....."

yeah, highlight THAT! in your male homosexual little book of absolute power...

e.g.: 'there are two things in the world that smell like fish, and one of them is fish' --a popular homosexual MALE!! gay anthem/popular club song at homosexual clubs and bars.

Who cares if he is gay? I'm straight and screaming it from rooftops. Give me a break!Oh and all the idiots screaming about how we aren't tolerant, right back atcha. Don't expect everyone to think gay is ok.

I appreciate everyones opinion, as well as anti-gay or pro-gay leanings. My only point was that we should not make this a personal vendetta. An innocent child killed himself due to unnecessary persecution, how can that be justified in any way? This is the whole reason behind Zach coming out.... Do people not see this?

can a man and woman make a baby? yes. can a gay male couple make a baby? no. Can a gay female couple make a baby? no.
Did god create males and females to be able to procreate? Yes.
I think people who are born gay have no choice, they are what they are. But i also see the other side.
In theory if all new children born were gay, we would become extinct. Without scientific artificial insemination, the gay people would create no children and we would disappear.
Think about it?

So it seems no matter what your stance on this issue you are being attacked. Isn't this EXACTLY what Zachary was talking about...why a little boy KILLED himself because people had sooooo much venom and anger and were just cruel because he was gay. And here people are attacking other people for being Anti-Gay or Pro-Gay. Listen if you don't agree with being gay...fine, you have a right to your opinion, if you agree with being gay...fine you also have a right to your opinion. I'm just saying you are acting the way towards each other the way people acted toward Jamey. Think about that. If you are all adults on here you certainly are NOT acting like it

I used to not have a problem with gays until I heard the way they talk about straight people and Christians. If they can't accept me then guess what? I can't accept you either.

The Bible is an amazing book. But moreso, an amazing guide to live your life by..by YOUR OWN CHOOSING. Your relationship with the Bible is personal and should be kept as such. If you choose to live your life the way the Bible instructs, then more power to you. If one does not choose to live in the manner in which the Bible instructs, that is no one's business but theirs.

I have always been taught the Bible is "man's interpretation of God's word"...whether how right or wrong that interpretation may be. Until someone can prove to me God himself sat down and penned the pages of the Bible, that is what I will always believe.

Live YOUR life, no one else's and we can all comfortably get along just fine.

Those individuals that choose to "preach to", "condemn others by", or "misquote" the bible are not living their lives as the Bible tells us. A person truly living the ways of the Bible would never do so through a gossip blog. Grow up.

Please check your Bible. Leviticus DOES indeed list eating shellfish as an abomination along with a lot of other things I'm sure folks today wouldn't go along with -- slavery, illegal to wear blended fabrics, women's periods and killing disobedient children. So please, if you're going to quote your Bible, at least know what's in it.

"But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:10)

"They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination." (Leviticus 11:11)

"Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:12)

"For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him." (Leviticus 20:9)

"If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people." (Leviticus 20:18)

"Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property." (Leviticus 25:44-45)

"...do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material." (Leviticus 19:19)
