American Idol: Bipolar Contestant Brings Tears to J.Lo's Eyes
One "American Idol" wannabe with an emotional story and big voice had Jennifer Lopez in tears on last night's episode.
17-year-old Shelby Twenten from Minnesota performed "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood's "Temporary Home," after describing her battle with bipolar disorder.
Twenten said she had "been struggling with depression since fourth grade" and "Idol" has "given me a reason to stay on my meds. When I'm off my meds, I'm incoherent and not myself."
She added that singing has "made me so happy and gotten me over so much stuff."
Shelby's singing clearly made J.Lo happy too -- as she said "You brought tears to my eyes! I love that song too, but somebody's gotta really sing it!"
It was three yeses for Twenten -- she's going to Hollywood!

I am so proud of this young lady. I am in my 50's and also have bipolar disorder. I have had it my whole life, and it took me a long time to deal with the reality of what I had. People put a crazy label on you when they find out. But really it is a chemical imbalance in your brain. It is very treatable with meds, and the other most important part of treatment is therapy. You have to come to grips that you have, but it is totally in your control to help yourself. You have it and will always have it. People have no idea what it is like until they have it. The other part we all have to remember who have it. The realty of it is, the people close to you in your life they have to deal with us. I am blessed and had great support, and a husband who was honest with me. He took it in his hands and made me get help. It effects their lives also.
It is so nice to see someone so young be a good positive role model. This should show others you can be successful and have bipolar. And like she mentioned, stay on your meds. My concern is for those who have no health care, and cant be on medication. Some people do not like to take their meds, they love the manic part of the disorder. Or feel so lost, they feel like why should I do anything. And I have totally been there. I played with my meds for years, and felt like I am ok and would not take them. Always resulting in a crash.
But it is just as if you were a diabetic, you have to do maintenance. This is 100% your responciablity, and you owe it to yourself. Life can be full of love, fun and excitement once you allow yourself. But this can end your life if you let it. Do not be ashamed that you have it. This is not your fault, it is a med condition. You did nothing to cause this. Hold your head up high.
Oh puleeeeeeeeeeeeze.....this chic has the nerve to get on national tv and say how she suffers from bi-polar condition.....are you kidding me?????? my husband has been bi-polar for many years, and i don't understand why she is making such a big friggin deal out of this.....with the proper meds., everything should be fine, just like my husband......they will do anything today to go national with the weirdest stories.....RIDICULOUS.....IF SHE HAD CANCER, GOD FORBID, AND HAD A FEW MONTHS TO LIVE, THEN THAT WOULD BE TRAGIC, NOT BEING BI-POLAR......THIS SHOW IS GETTING RIDICULOUS NOW.....AND WHAT HAPPEN TO ALL THE CRAZIES THAT CAN'T SING.....IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO AUDITIONS IS GOING TO HOLLYWOOD.......WHAT'S UP WITH AMERICAN IDOL?????? I USED TO ENJOY THE PEOPLE WHO COULD NOT SING, THEY WERE NUTS, BUT IT WAS ENJOYABLE, AND VERY ENTERTAINING....THIS SEASON SO FAR IS VERY BORING.......IF THIS CONTINUES, GRANTED LOTS OF VIEWERS WILL BE TUNING OUT.....I HEARD THE RATINGS ARE WAY DOWN ALREADY COMPARED TO LAST YEAR....THIS SHOW IS GETTING OLD HAT, AND PEOPLE ARE ALREADY TIRED OF IT....SAME THING YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR....ENOUGH ALREADY.....
Being bi polar has a lot of stigma attached to it whether you want to accept it or not and yes the outcome can be tragic if not talked about or treated properly. The more people that talk about it the less stigma will be. People keep it a secret because they feel embarrassed and don't understand it. I am one that doesnt care what people think about my problems or issues. I find in 9 out of 10 cases the people I tell about my problems or issues end up having the same issues themselves or know someone close to them that does. In turn you receive feedback and know you are not alone. Men who are bi polar are more likely to hide it or deny that they have it. If they felt more comfortable in society about talking about their problems they would be more likely to go to the doctor and seek help and take the medications that they need. They think they can handle it because that is the "manly" thing to do. By that girl telling her story maybe helped someone who is afraid to talk about it or seek help...men or women. It could save a life or two. I for one am proud of her for speaking about it. If my husband had sought help or took the medictions he should have been taking, he may be alive today. Instead he was so confused, angry, depressed, ashamed and tired, he chose to put a gun to his head and blow his brains out at the house we lived in with our four children. Now we are left to make sense of it all and have to live with that the rest of our lives. And he cut his life short and is missing out on so much that he had to live for.
