The 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day" made Will Smith a superstar. Fans have been waiting for a sequel, and it looks like they're going to get two!
Director Roland Emmerich told Entertainment Weekly that two follow-ups to "ID4" are planned, tentatively titled "ID Forever Part 1" and "ID Forever Part 2." They will take place 20 years after the original film, when the distress call sent by the aliens in the first film reaches their reinforcements, who head to Earth with a vengeance.
Expect to see one familiar face, Bill Pullman's Thomas Whitmore, who would've termed out as President. It's unclear what government role, if any, he holds.
Will Smith hasn't been confirmed for the sequels, but his Capt. Steven Hiller character may not even be the focus. Instead, a younger generation of heroes will step up, including Hiller's stepson Dylan (Ross Bagley in the original).
"It's still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it's a little bit like the sons take over," Emmerich explained.
In true Hollywood two-parter fashion, "Part 1" will have a cliffhanger ending. "The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again."
